About Me
I studied painting at the Ontario College of Art (now called OCAD University). Right after school I worked for the Issac's Gallery in Toronto. After the Issac's Gallery closed I worked as an artist in advertising agencies and interior decorating studios in downtown Toronto and participated in a number of Toronto art shows.
Since moving to the Temiskaming region 23 years ago I have been actively painting landscape paintings that grapple with the effects of human activities on nature. I intend to keep exploring and documenting the region and it's relation to our challenged relationship with nature as well as pursue the unending, worthwhile challenge of making beautiful oil paintings.
Artist Statement
I make art to reflect and comment on the society I live in. I’ve chosen painting because I believe there are enough options within the medium to adequately record a response. I also enjoy using the rich historical legacy that painting possesses.
Words made their way into my paintings many years ago. You can say much more with words and images together than you can with words or images separately. When preparing to paint I ask myself two questions:
If I want to say something about all of us, how would I say it?
If I want to depict something about all of us, how would I depict it?
My method for making art is to take my personal answers to these two questions and blend them into an artwork. Looking at my work over time you can see a variety of ways that I have done this.
My work has been largely critical of our society and has become more critical over time. But what happens when we move beyond criticality to an admission of our society’s impending mortality? How does that fit with an aging society? With my own mortality?
I look forward to exploring these questions as I continue making art. Also, perhaps most importantly, I just love painting.
